Las capturas de langosta espinosa Panulirus argus (Latreille, 1804) en Cuba alcanzaron sus mayores volúmenes en la década de 1980 con un promedio anual de 11565 ton. En la década de 1990, la captura descendió a un promedio de 9327 ton, lo cual se ha visto agudizado entre 2000 y 2007 con un promedio de 6262 ton y una mayor variabilidad de las capturas, a pesar de un perfeccionamiento del sistema de manejo pesquero dado por: la disminución del esfuerzo pesquero y de la tasa de mortalidad por pesca desde 1999, el aumento del período de veda desde 2001 y el incremento gradual de la talla mínima legal de captura a partir de 2004. An study of the Ekman transport in the adjacient oceanic region to the suroccidental shelf of the gulf of Batabanó between 82,5º and 81,5º of west longitude and 21,5º and 19,5º of north latitude it was carried out. This is a zone of great importance of being one of the main sites of pueruli onshore to the shelf shallow waters. The monthly analysis of the transport between 1967 and 2006 establishes water onshore to the shelf, with remarkable increases related to the influence of hurricanes Gilbert (1988), Mitch (1998), Iván and Charlie (2004) and Olga (2007). The seasonal pattern showed values superior to the averages from September to November, which indicates greater oceanic water offshore, related with greater pueruli entrance. (SeaWIFS) ocean color monthly images, Sea Surface Temperature (SST) pathfinder data obtained from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) sensors, and lobster (Panulirus argus) captures at the Cuban shelf were examined in order to analyze their spatial and temporal variability. A cross-correlation analysis was made between the standardized anomalies of the environmental variables (Chl a and SST) and the standardized anomalies of lobster captures for each fishery zones for the period between 1997 and 2005. For the deep waters adjacent to the fishing zones it was not observed a clear Chl a seasonality and on average the lowest values occurred south of the Island. Resumen Se obtiene la variabilidad espacial y temporal de la temperatura superficial del mar (TSM) para las aguas de la plataforma cubana, así como la relación de estas con las capturas de langostas, en el período comprendido entre Enero/1997-Diciembre/2004. Los datos de de esta variable ambiental son obtenidos del sensor “Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer” (AVHRR). La periodicidad de las imágenes y de los datos de captura por zonas de pesca es mensual. Las aguas oceánicas y de la plataforma tienen un comportamiento estacional para la TSM, alcanzando las máximas en Agosto (29,5°C) y las mínimas en Febrero (26°C).
